Are You Prepping for the Apocalypse???

There are so many prophetic utterances on the internet at this moment urging us to hurry and stock up because the world is going to end.

If the world is going to end, I would think that our stocking up would be a moot point, because we wouldn’t be around to enjoy it.

Reading or listening to this rhetoric really irks me, along with lumping those who think ahead for the purpose of sustaining their families during difficulties are part of the crazy few who claim that we need to kiss our touches and get ready to biff it!

First I want to assure you that the world is NOT coming to an end and that is NOT why anyone with half-a-whit would be stocking up on food.
(When something apocalyptic does occur, the earth will still be here, there will be survivors.  Life and the way we live it might change, many might die, but if you are prepped, you and your family might be among the survivors.)

Yes, the stock market is teetering, the petrodollar is in danger, earthquakes are being reported in record droves at heightened strengths across the globe, dozens of volcanoes are now active, Fukushima is still poisoning the ocean, marine life is heaving itself upon shorelines or completely decimated just offshore.

Rumors of wars and strange military allies are crowding the headlines, military training maneuvers are being conducted on city streets, food prices are steadily on the rise and somewhere in space, there is a meteor with Earth’s name etched upon it…

These things are happening and who knows when the worst will become a reality?
Does that really matter?  Well, that all depends on you and WHY you are storing food.

If you believe in an Apocalypse, does that make you a crazy prepper?

My personal opinion about labeling those who choose to care enough about their families to seek out their comfort and safety is wrong.

The Apocalypse for some families may be a job loss that brings them to the brink of homelessness, the terminal illness of a loved one, dealing with a loss of mobility due to accident or injury, or the loss of a vehicle that sustains the breadwinners ability to secure the means to house and feed their family.

Having 3, 6 or 12 months supply of food and non-food necessities would make a dire situation more livable.  Having food in the pantry during lean times can free up money, otherwise used for food, to pay the monthly mortgage or repair the automobile.

As for the “Apocalypse” – of course, there will be one, the book of Revelations mentions this several times…but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and the apocalypse to one may be completely altered to another – also, Revelations states that there will be survivors.

There is an internet buzz about a meteor supposedly lurking in the darkness of space, meteor strikes earthpoised to strike earth,  personally, I think the prediction is a bit sketchy – but what do I know?

Anyway, IF this meteor strikes, it definitely would be apocalyptic to anyone in its path, especially the eastern seaboard to the Appalachians and near all of Florida.

To those in the central states, or on the western side of the continent, this would be a monumental tragedy and would certainly affect the commodities supply line, damage or eliminate the grid and possibly cause catastrophic seismic activity in many locations.

~ But to those who are not seriously affected or only lose power, or to those who are on farms or live in rural communities who have stocked up and prepared, this would not be apocalyptic, it would be expected. ~

The west coast has been bracing for the ‘Big One’ for decades. ( I doubt that there will be a grand announcement when this one gives in, nor will there be time to do much but get in a safe place.  Many will be spared and those who have will be far better off than those who have little to nothing.  If you really want to know what’s going on in your quake zone, I would recommend following: ; ; and

Dutchsinse has been a great blessing to many across the globe because of his uncanny accuracy in scientifically predicting earthquakes.  He has been able to warn cities and countries hours and days in advance giving an opportunity for them to review their safety criteria and save many lives.  Thanks Dude. 🙂

How about the predictions for complete economic failure?
Rioting in the streets?  Retail stores looted?  Money being worthless? Banks closing?  Utilities not operable?  3rd world country?

What are YOU expecting?
What are YOU preparing for?
Should be you mocked or teased for your own foresight?

These same whiners and mockers will be the hungry ones who angrily point their finger at you when there is no food to spare and blame YOU for hoarding it, simply because you chose to methodically stash away a bit for a supposed apocalyptic day. empty store shelves
According to these food-slackers, You will have, single-handedly, created the empty shelves at the supermarket and are the reason thousands – no millions, are dying!

We know better, YOU know better.  Review your why’s, then re-commit yourself to stocking up for whatever YOUR worse-case-scenario is and then keep stocking, eating and rotating.

I would hope that you are smarter than them, that you will decide to manage your own fate and your own household by not being sucked into the “All is well, FEMA has got us covered.” mentality.  You are responsible for yourself, your family and others under your care.

I Blinked and Missed It Again!!!

Apocalypse Ahead Warning SignI arrived home last night to learn that all the power was out on our street, in our local neighborhood – heck, in the WHOLE city!  How strange….

There seemed to be no tell-tale fire, the sounds of rushing fire-trucks or even a sheriff slowly driving through the streets with a megaphone to announce “All is well – power will be back on shortly.”

The megaphone thing was something the sheriff did nearly 50 years ago – before the age of electronics…like cell phones, dvd’s, and even oooh….vcr’s.  We had 3 channels on the TV, plus a few static-laden channels from the UHF and VHF realms of media space.  Rabbit ears were used to bring them back into focus and if you missed a show, re-runs hadn’t been invented yet.
Yep, those were the good-ol’-days.

So did I Miss the End of the World AGAIN???

Let’s see – how many end of the world scenarios have there been in the recent years?

  • I remember Y2K – that was a doozey!  I didn’t feel it though and felt that the hype was over rated, and I was right – good thing I went to bed without a worry, because the sun got up as happy as usual.
  • 911- a very sad day for so many –  seemed more of a signs of the times and definitive shift from feeling safe and comfortable at home to terribly vulnerable and victimized.
  • Now 2012, the Mayan Calendar’s End of Days – that one was a breath holder!
I went to bed and got up and realized – I have missed all the excitement!
The end of the world had Left Me Behind!  Ugh!
  • The past two years we have been geared up for ‘the-end-is-near’ and the ‘end’ keeps forgetting to tap me on the shoulder to get my attention.  I really feel left out of the loop!

I missed BOTH the asteroid striking the earth AND yesterdays End-of-Days!

What next?  Will I miss California falling into the ocean too??? Sheesh!

As the sun began to sink behind the horizon, I began searching around the house for a candle and matches – I even tossed some wood and kindling in the fire pit – in case dinner would be an ‘eating-out’ opportunity.  While searching, I realized I didn’t have any lamp oil, that maybe I should get some.  I worried that IF there was a TEOWAKI event, I didn’t have my wood stove installed yet.  What would I do IF the electricity really did quit? – Was I ready?    I knew the answer – NO – I am not ready.

I have a gravity water filter…I made my own Berkey with two 5 gallon buckets, the Berkey filters and a spigot – good girl!  But…I did not have alternative heat or cooking means for my family for the long winter ahead.

Winters in Missouri are power-outage nightmares, especially if there is an ice storm.

What about light?  Did I really want to use my precious oil as a light source? No.
Do I have enough candles?  I don’t think so….
What about space heaters in each room? You know the upside-down ceramic flower pots with tea-lights, or even blocks of soapstone to put at the base of the bed for warm toes.
Am I ready??? No.  Ugh!

There is sooooo much to consider and do to prepare for a total TEOWAKI event!

Back to my strange, kinda freaky, feelings.  Hmmm….I wondered – can they create a focused EMP that can attack only the grid that effects homes and infrastructure, and not cars or mechanical-computerized devices?  I then hopped on my tablet to search these questions and realized that if the internet was up, we probably didn’t have an EMP attack.   I later learned from a neighbor that it turns out a little bird took down a transformer in a nearby town.  The power was out for only an hour and a half.  We ate in.

Sigh of Relief!!!

(If taking down the grid is THAT easy!  We’re in real trouble!)

I am glad I slept through this apocalypse, but I must keep in mind, there are many other apocalypses to look forward to, such as:

The tidal wave that supposed to sweep the east coast,
The mega New Madrid earthquake that will split our continent in two along the Mississippi river,
The Super Volcanic eruption of Yellowstone,
The Cascadia Fault Zone,
Utah’s Wasatch Front gearing-up for “The-Big-One” and let’s not overlook…
California slipping into the ocean.

If I missed mentioning your favorite apocalypse – let me know.

So many exciting adventures are ahead of us…..don’t be like me, sleeping through ALL of them.

Be Prepared.

May the Storage Be With You.

Why Store Food?

There is a stigma attached to the notion of food storage.  Often media events confuse those who choose to plan ahead to be fanatical prepper types.  See glossary post: What Is  a Prepper?

There is a myriad of reasons to store food, two of which cannot be ignored:  natural disaster and job loss.

Natural/Manmade Disaster:

In the event of a natural disaster, or man-made one, it can take relief agencies 2 to 7 days to reach you.

What will you eat and drink until then?

If you are imagining special forces troops to be singling you and your community out for food and water drops during the first few days, you’re fooling yourself.

Your most immediate help will come from your own preps, a neighbor on your street, or in your community, then family – if they can get there.  Next will be from your church and last the government, or agencies, that take action during the aftermath.

To be the most help to your immediate family and your community, you need to prepare for your own in case of disaster, so that you can have the strength and peace of mind to help other.

Job Loss:

With the economy seemingly on the brink, jobs are harder to find and harder to keep.  An employer can ‘lay-off’ employees for any reason in most areas, workforce loyalty is rarely regarded as part of a corporations integrity or benefits program.

Many people receive a pink-slip without any warning and then they are left to figure out what they are going to do.  If you have enough food and non-essentials, then you only need to fine work to pay the bills.  Planning and prepping for the unexpected can help you maintain your own self-worth and increase your ability to take care of your family.
